There’s a special kind of magic to autumn camping. The crunch of leaves underfoot, that first sip of hot chocolate watching the steam rise, and waking up to misty golden morning views that look like they belong on a postcard.
But autumn does bring its own set of challenges – colder nights, unpredictable weather, and damp gear if you’re not careful. So before you chuck on your woolly hat and hit the road, here are my top 3 essential tips for autumn camping to make sure you stay warm, dry, and full of adventure spirit!

🌤️ 1. Layer Up (and Remember Your Feet!)

As in, remember to keep your feet layered up..! Autumn weather loves to keep you on your toes. One minute you’re basking in the sun, the next you’re diving for shelter from a surprise downpour. The secret to this is layering smart.
Start with breathable thermals like these, add a cosy fleece, and top it off with a decent waterproof shell jacket. Don’t skimp on socks either! Cold feet are the fastest route to a miserable time!!
💡 Pro tip: Keep a small “damp gear” bag or box outside the van door so you can stash wet coats and boots before climbing inside. If you have a diesel heater, have a way of hanging things (safely) above it while it’s on to get them dry. We set up a washing line across the inside of the van in the Hebrides when we went out for the day with the diesel heater turned right up! Make sure you have a portable dehumidifier in the van to soak up the moisture.
🔥 2. Create Your Own Cosy Den

Your campervan is your autumn holiday home, so make it feel like one. Think soft blankets, fairy lights, and mugs of something warm within arm’s reach. And don’t forget your thermal screen covers! We love these from Olpro (featured in the picture at the top of the page) – they’re a great price and have lasted us 5 years (and counting).
I love a portable fake plant too 🤣. A few creature comforts go a long way when the temperature drops and you’re inside for longer.
Add a small rug on the van floor to keep the chill from creeping up (we love using a soft bath mat as you can machine wash it once you’re home), and level up your snug game with a hot water bottle – it’s the vanlife equivalent of a warm hug.
💬 Vanlife hack: Warm your bed before you climb in by slipping your hot water bottle under the covers for five minutes. Instant toasty bliss!
🕯️ 3. Pack Smart, Pack Light (But Don’t Forget the Essentials)

As you well know, space is precious in a campervan and you don’t need to bring everything to enjoy autumn camping. The trick is knowing what’s essential. From weather-proof clothing to cosy bedding and lighting that sets the mood, packing smart means more space for snacks (and maybe a cheeky bottle of red / Baileys?).
🍂 I’ve put together a downloadable autumn campervan packing checklist to make it super easy – you can grab it before your next trip!
